Design Philosophy Storytelling. We all love a good story. It is our belief, that it is the production designer's responsibility to create an environment that projects and expresses, without a doubt, the emotional and physical journey of the main character (and those around them) in the story. This environment must be believable in it's own reality. Modifying and superimposing historical context, past and contemporary, in order to help propel the story visually and make the voyage of the film more effective, makes us very happy. We do not bind ourselves with the laws of encyclopedias and history books. In sketching out the future, we like to keep one foot in contemporary times. The compositing of the future, near or far, with contemporary visual environments, objects, and textures is tricky business. But knowing and understanding the paths of technology as they are today, allows us to understand where they will be implied down the road. Expressionism (in it's pure form) focuses on reflecting emotional context and tone, the hard and fast facts of our own reality should be treated is plastic - pliable and re-shapable. Storytelling. That is what attracts us to film. What is a Production Designer? The Production Designer holds one of the key creative roles in the filmmaking process. Working directly with the Director and Director of Photography, the Production Designer creates and defines the visual elements of a film - whether historic, contemporary, futuristic, imaginary, or inaccessible. The Production Designer is responsible for all visual aspects of a film. In essence, everything that goes in front of the camera. To accomplish this complex task, the Production Designer uses a staff of Art Directors, Set Designers, Illustrators, Storyboard Artists, and Model Makers to conceive and design all the environments and elements required by the script. The talents of the Set Decorator, Prop Master, Construction Coordinator, Location Manager, Costume Designer, Makeup/Special Makeup Effects Supervisors, Special Effects Supervisor, and the Special Visual Effects Supervisor, aid the Production Designer in the execution of the physical and virtual worlds dreamed up. |
